Scope of Works:

The project included the civil works and structural concrete works for the new asphalt plant in Gympie for Downer Australia.  The scope of work included:

  • Clearing and Grubbing
  • Bulk earthworks
  • Stormwater drainage installation
  • Gravel pavement construction
  • Environmental controls including bio basin
  • Block retaining wall construction
  • Structural concrete for future asphalt plant
  • Installation of precast retaining wall panels
  • Concrete works to facilitate the installation of the Accuweigh weighbridge

The challenges on the project included:

Changing Design – The asphalt plant was under construction in China at the same time as the earthworks and structural concrete works were underway.  The client was constantly receiving changes to the footing requirements for the overseas suppliers.  SCC worked closely with the client to minimise any rework and provide the best solution for their changing needs.

Wet Weather – The project was completed during the traditional period of wet weather which in early 2013 included 2 major flood events.  Prior to the forecast events additional environmental controls such as earth bunds and diversion drains were installed to minimise any adverse effects from the rain and potential flooding.

Other Contractors – the client was under a strict timetable to provide the structural footings for the asphalt plant.  This required the client to schedule a number of different subcontractors or varying disciplines to work on the site at the same time.   SCC worked closely with the client to ensure all works were co-ordinated in a safe and efficient manner.
