cope of Works:
The upgrade of the Exhibition Rd – Ramsey Road intersection was completed for AHC. The works were done in accordance with the Queensland Main Roads Specifications. Being a heavily trafficked intersection, extensive traffic control was required to complete the job safely. The works included:
- Clearing and Grubbing
- Bulk earthworks
- Stormwater drainage installation
- Subgrade replacement works
- Gravel pavement construction
- Kerbing
- Seal and Asphalt installation
Challenges:
The challenges on the project included:
Traffic Management – Exhibition Road is a heavily trafficked road with Southside State School to the west of the project and Woolworths supermarket to the south of the intersection with Ramsey Rd. Works were carried out under normal 2 way traffic conditions with no incidents.
Services – there were a number of existing services through the job site including Telstra, overhead power, sewer and water. To minimise delays these services were located and surveyed with information sent back to the designers. The design was changed where required to avoid these services.
Unsuitable Subgrade – Upon excavation to the design subgrade level it was discovered that the material was unsuitable for the design pavement. In places, up to an additional 700mm of subgrade replacement of layers of geofabric, CBR15 material and Type 2.5 roadbase was needed to obtain the required subgrade.
